RESUMO

The appropriate clinical management of the integrated process of Donation and Transplantation implies the participation of the Transplant Coordinator. The aim of this article is to present the process of Certification of Transplant Coordinators in Europe since 2001, in accordance with the Council of Europe Recommendations and the evolving model implemented in 2008 under the auspices of the UEMS, reporting the longest running European standardized assessment of Transplant Coordination skills and knowledge. It includes the rationale for development of a certification process, how the examinations were developed and updated, eligibility to take the examination, and relationship with standards of practice for Transplant Coordinators. A total of 455 healthcare professionals were certified in two phases: 1(st) ETCO certification since 2001 to 2007 (390) and 2(nd) ETCO/UEMS certification from 2008 to 2011 (65).

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in the dairy herds from Minas Gerais, Brazil, during the years 2009 and 2010. A total of 2,915 serum samples were collected from the lactating cows of 151 properties in eleven municipalities located in the Sete Lagoas region. The Microscopic Agglutination Test was used to detect antileptospiral agglutinins. An individual animal prevalence of 20.7 percent (95 percent CI = 17.1 percent - 24.3 percent) and a herd prevalence of 80.8 percent (95 percent CI = 73.8 percent = 87.7 percent) were determined. The most prevalent serovars were hardjoprajitno at 19.4 percent; hardjoprajitno strain Norma at 17.4 percent; and hardjo-bovis at 17.4 percent. These results show the significance of the hardjo serovar in bovine leptospirosis cases in Minas Gerais...

We report the effects of electron-lattice coupling on the charge density distribution study of armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). Here, we perform a theoretical investigation explaining the unexpected electronic density states observed experimentally. By means of a tight-binding approach with electron-lattice coupling, we obtained the same characteristic pattern of charge density along the C-C bonds suggested by both scanning tunneling and transmission electron microscopic measurements. Our results suggest electronic localized states whose sizes are dependent on the GNR width. We also show that our model rescues the quasi-particle charge-transport mechanism in GNRs. The remarkable agreement with experimental evidence allows us to conclude that our model could be, in many aspects, a fundamental tool when it comes to the phenomenological understanding of the charge behavior in this kind of system.

RESUMO

We report the clinical case of a 48-year-old woman with advanced renal cell carcinoma, and an inferior vena cava thrombus extending into the right atrium. The patient underwent complete tumor excision with radical nephrectomy and inferior vena cava trombectomy using adjunctive cardiopulmonary bypass and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. Pathological studies revealed no capsular invasion by the renal cell carcinoma. Eighteen months postoperatively the patient is asymptomatic and on immunosuppressive therapy for suspected metastatic disease. We discuss the morbilidity, mortality and long term survival of patients with similar presentation of renal cell carcinoma based in a review of the published literature. Long term survival after surgical treatment is possible in a patient with localized renal cell carcinoma extending into the right atrium. In patient with localized renal cell carcinoma and inferior vena cava tumor thrombus the cephalad extent of inferior vena caval involvement does not appear to influence the prognosis.

RESUMO

Aortoiliac aneurysms constitute one of the main challenges facing vascular surgeons worldwide. We report for the first time the successful reconstruction of the aorta and iliac arteries with a quadrifurcated prosthesis, in a 72-year-old man with an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm, and aneurysms of the iliac arteries involving both iliac bifurcations. The aortoiliac reconstruction was performed with a quadrifurcated knitted Dacron graft, revascularising both internal and external iliac arteries. In our opinion, the use of such a graft is recommended in aortoiliac revascularisations whenever it is advisable for the preservation of flow to internal iliac arteries.
